The Provincial Government of Zamboanga Sibugay celebrated Kalayaan 2006 in commemoration of the 108th Independence Day on June 12, 2006 at the Capitol Grounds. A 21 gun salute and wreath laying ceremony was offered to honor the national heroes who in one fought for Philippine Independence. A representative of the Department of Education briefly read the history of Philippine Independence while guest speaker Brigadier General Nestor Ochoa of the 102nd Brigade emphasized Filipino heroism values. The celebration kicked off with a motorcade at the Ipil Sports Complex.
